Installing PAPYRUS 7.0 Under Windows NT 4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP After you have used your Web browser to download the Papyrus Installer, you need to figure out where your browser has deposited it! The downloaded file is named PAP7017.EXE. Your browser _should_ have asked you where you wanted to save the file, but if not you must now search your computer and locate it. To make things easy for me to explain here, once you have found PAP7017.EXE please move it to the "root" directory of your C: drive (also known as "C:\"). Using your mouse, click your Start menu. From this menu, select "Programs", then "Accessories", and then "Command Prompt". You will now find yourself at a "C:\WINDOWS>" prompt. Type: c:\pap7017 and then press the Enter key. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen. PAPYRUS will now install itself onto your computer. The installation program will ask your permission before making any changes to your system. *** NOTE: When Papyrus asks you about making changes to your *** *** AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, be sure to choose *** *** "Bypass these changes". *** (If you are updating from an earlier edition of PAPYRUS Version 7.0, answer all questions as if you were installing PAPYRUS for the first time. This will update your program files without disturbing your existing data files.) To return to Windows after the installer returns you to the "C:\>" prompt, type "exit". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Once you have completed the standard installation as explained above, follow these instructions to create a shortcut icon for PAPYRUS: (If either your PAPYRUS programs or your PAPYRUS database are not located in C:\PAP, then you will have to modify the following instructions, replacing "C:\PAP" with the appropriate directory.) 1. Right-click on the desktop itself -- that is, not in any open window or on any icon. From the resulting menu choose "New" and then "Shortcut". 2. A dialog box will now appear on your screen to allow you to set up the shortcut. You will be prompted for the name of the program -- type "C:\PAP\PAP.EXE" (without the quotation marks). Click the "Next" button. You'll then be asked to supply the name for the shortcut -- type "Papyrus 7.0". 3a. If you see a "Next" button, click it. A window showing the attractive PAPYRUS Icon will then appear. Click the "Finish" button. A Papyrus 7.0 icon will now appear on your desktop. 3b. If you do not see a "Next" button, then just click the "Finish" button. A generic icon labeled "Papyrus 7.0" will now appear on your desktop. 4. Right-click the newly created PAPYRUS shortcut icon. From the resulting menu choose "Properties". 5. This will bring up another large dialog box with several tabs at the top. Select the "Program" tab. In the "Working" field, type "C:\PAP" (or whatever directory is to contain your PAPYRUS _data_ files). 6. If you previously saw only a generic icon for PAPYRUS, now click the "Change Icon" button. Dismiss any messages about there being no available icons. For the filename containing the icon, type "C:\PAP\PAP.ICO". Click "OK" and you should now see our attractive icon. 7. Select the "Memory" tab. In the "Extended (XMS) Memory" section, set the value to 1024. Either click the down arrow and select "1024" from the list, or else click in the field and type "1024" in place of "Auto". Similarly, under "Conventional Memory" change "Initial Environment" from "Auto" to "4096". Finally, turn OFF the "Uses HMA" checkbox. 8. Select the "Screen" tab. Choose "Full-screen". Turn OFF the "Fast ROM emulation" and "Dynamic memory allocation" checkboxes. If the "Initial size" menu is active, set it to "25 lines". 9. Select the "Misc" tab. Turn ON the "Always Suspend" and "Exclusive mode" checkboxes. Turn OFF the "Allow screen saver" and "Fast pasting" checkboxes. Also, slide the "Idle Sensitivity" slider all the way to the "high" end. This will ensure best performance under Windows NT. 10. Click the "OK" button to dismiss the dialog box. Once these steps have been performed, you will be ready to launch PAPYRUS from your desktop. Please see your Windows documentation for more information on copying the PAPYRUS shortcut icon into your Start menu or anywhere else that suits you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ When you launch PAPYRUS, you might discover that rather than filling the whole screen, PAPYRUS uses only the top half of your screen. If this happens to you there are two solutions: (1) Update your copy of PAPYRUS to Version 7.0.16c or later. OR (2) Carry out these steps: (a) Launch PAPYRUS. (b) Switch to windowed mode by pressing Alt-Enter. (c) Select the Control menu by clicking the icon in the upper left corner of the window, or by pressing Alt-Space, and then choose "Properties". (d) Select the "Layout" tab. (e) Set the "Screen Buffer Size" Height to 25. (f) Click the OK button. (g) Choose "Save properties for future windows with same title", and click OK. (h) Quit PAPYRUS. (i) Future launches should correctly fill the screen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you wish to run PAPYRUS in a window, rather than in full-screen mode, you might run into some problems with the mouse not functioning correctly, because Windows NT is intercepting your mouse clicks. You can remedy this situation as follows: (a) Launch PAPYRUS. (b) Switch to windowed mode by pressing Alt-Enter. (c) Select the Control menu by clicking the icon in the upper left corner of the window, or by pressing Alt-Space, and then choose "Properties". (d) Select the "Options" tab. (e) Turn off "QuickEdit Mode" and "Insert Mode". (f) Click the OK button. (g) Choose "Save properties for future windows with same title", and click OK. (h) Quit PAPYRUS. (i) Future launches should show better mouse functioning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
